Sport martial arts are practiced in a ring, cage or mat, and adhere to sporting rules. The most restrictive, Western Boxing, allows only fist punches; Kickboxing & Savate allow kicking, and Muay Thai adds knees & elbows (ouch!). MMA is the most rule-free, allowing takedowns, groundfighting & body-lock submissions (tap!). Even MMA has restrictions, however, like no strikes to the spine or neck, no finger breaking, etc.

Fitness & coordination are inevitable benefits of any sport martial art. The degree to which you actually become a better fighter, however, depends on how frequently you spar with partners. Some people are fine with just developing their physical skills, while others want to test their mettle in the aren

Reality-based martial arts, also known as Combatives, are tailored to the street, the military, and other life-and-death situations. Systems like Israeli Kapap & Krav Maga have pioneered the field, having battle-tested their techniques in the Middle East. Weapons systems, like Amok! & Filipino Kali, maximize the devastating power of blunt & edge weapons.

Combatives also factor in real-world considerations, i.e., multiple attackers, weapons, and the physical advantage men have over women. The best line of defense depends on the situation, and the best solution is often avoidance, even if it means running away. Combatives fighting is not pretty, but it seeks the hard truths of effective self defense.

The "Art" in "Martial Art" refers to the perfection of martial technique as determined by the limitations & capabilities of the human body. In each situation there is an optimal solution; the task of the martial artist is to identify & execute the correct technique to win the encounter.

In some cases, it means conflict avoidance, or to quote Bruce Lee, "the art of fighting, without fighting" (Enter the Dragon). Indeed, philosophy permeates the martial arts, but is understood only over time. Self-discipline, lifelong knowledge-building, & a respect for the physical well-being of others are common traits amongst enlightened martial artists.
